National Palace Museum hours are not one timetable for every part of the institution. The northern branch’s official visitor page lists separate arrangements for Exhibition Hall I, the Children’s Gallery, the library, gardens and Chang Dai-chi’en’s residence. A visitor who chooses a date from only the headline gallery hours can miss the service they actually wanted.
The site identifies the northern branch’s main address as No. 221, Section 2, Zhishan Road in Taipei’s Shilin District. It separately lists the southern branch in Taibao City, Chiayi County. Treat those as different destinations when booking travel, rather than assuming every event or page under the museum’s name concerns Taipei.
Choose the branch and the facility
For the northern branch, Exhibition Hall I normally opens Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ticket sales and exchanges finish at 4:30 p.m. A visitor arriving near closing therefore has less transaction time than the final closing hour might suggest. Plan the entry step as well as the time you hope to spend inside.
The Children’s Gallery is on level B1 of Exhibition Hall I and follows that hall’s opening hours. The museum lists free admission and says adults and children of all ages are welcome, with children younger than 10 required to be accompanied by an adult. The free-entry statement applies to that gallery; it should not be generalized into a claim that every museum service is free.
Zhishan Garden also follows Exhibition Hall I’s opening hours and is listed as free. Zhide Garden is listed as open throughout the year with free admission. These differences are useful for someone planning a shorter visit, but a garden schedule is not evidence that a gallery or research service is operating at the same time.
Check research and residence visits separately
The library’s published schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with closure on Sunday, Monday and public holidays. Its address is in the administration area on Lixing Street. A Sunday museum trip therefore should not be treated as a Sunday library visit, even though the main exhibition hall is normally open.
Chang Dai-chi’en’s residence has a different arrangement again. The page lists Saturday and Sunday visits at 10:30 a.m., with stated holiday and anniversary closures. It requires an advance reservation through the official website at least one week before the visit and tells visitors to check approval three days beforehand. Submitting a request is not the same as having an approved reservation.
